Essential Balance

ARE YOU A KHALEESI OR A KHAL?

Did you watch the HBO series Game of Thrones?

I love the character development of Khaleesi. Really, how could I not resonate with her, as I am born at the full moon, with a moon-ruled cancer rising, in the year of the dragon and my company is called Moon Dragon?! (Can’t hurt that my BF has taken to calling me Khaleesi, either.)

But, before this HBO fantasy arrived on the small screen, I was bemoaning the fact that there were no strong female characters represented in current TV shows. I especially complained that I couldn’t point to a single character that embodied the archetype of the goddess. Then along came the rich fictional world of Game of Thrones, in which the character of Khaleesi, the Princess Daenerys Targaryen, evolved from a frightened and exploited young girl, little more than a victim or a pawn really, into a true goddess.

At the outset, the men in Daenerys’ life used and dominated her. Her weak brother, who thought that he was the dragon and should be king, sells her to Khal Drogo, a great warlord of the Dothraki, and she becomes the Khal’s wife’ or Khaleesi. As the series unfolds, Khaleesi claims her own power — a power that is not derived from her title and position.

While this character certainly could have chosen to resign herself to her circumstances in despair, Daenerys evolves by discovering and claiming her true inner power and dormant gifts ranging from her sexuality, to her voice, to her strength, caring and compassion, to her unique supernatural inheritance as the dragon-born —Khaleesi has the magical power to withstand fire. Thus, Khaleesi is a beautiful exemplar of the archetype of the goddess; the wild feminine in balance— adaptable and irrepressible, fierce yet tender, smart yet sensual, strong yet caring and compassionate, a powerful individual and also a loving partner and devoted mate.

Khaleesi’s journey in Game of Thrones brings to mind these questions that you may wish to reflect on to assist in deepening self awareness and unlocking your own personal power and special magic.

* * *

Have YOU claimed your power?

Or, is there some area of life in which you are still playing small?

How are YOU choosing to respond to your current life circumstances?

Is there some arena of your life in which you play the role of victim?

How else might you choose to see and to respond to your current situation?

How might your current life circumstances be helping you to evolve? Are they demanding that you acknowledge, develop and/or express some quality within yourself?

Are you balanced? Or do you tend to be more in the masculine using mainly linear thinking, logic and reason without much room for intuition, imagination, and a more fluid feminine awareness? Or the opposite?
