Observations on the film AWAKE, The Life of Yogananda

I recently saw the film Awake, The Life of Yogananda. Yogananda was an Indian yogi who introduced countless Westerners to the practice of meditation and kriya yoga, which he described as the “airplane method to God.” He founded Self Realization Fellowship and wrote an influential book, Autobiography of a Yogi, to share his teachings. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend his inspiring book to those interested in the spiritual journey.

This blog is not intended to be a film review, but instead to convey some of my thoughts upon seeing the film. My short theater critic-style take on Awake is this: The film is well done with interesting archival footage. The tone is just a bit preachy. But, don’t let that stop you from seeing the film. I think it’s really worthwhile, inspiring, and thought-provoking. Here are a few of observations that I wanted to share with you:

Making Ripples / 6 Ways to Raise Your Vibration

Can you think of someone who is infectiously happy? Someone who simply radiates joy? Just being around that person lifts your spirits. Maybe you can also think of someone who seems to carry a dark cloud wherever they go. Their contentiousness and unresolved anger are always about to boil over on the next hapless person who disagrees with them or just looks at them the “wrong way.” This person may leave you feeling heavy and dull.

As described above, our energy ripples out and affects other people. The energy of other people also affects us. The vibration of each individual contributes to the energetic environment of the world in which we live.

After a solo retreat in the Catskill Mountains, I was inspired to write these words to share the transcendent experience with you.  Then, I put pictures to the words creating my first YouTube video! I hope that you enjoy it and get a sense of the peace and healing power of nature.

The Sacred Journey of Self Discovery

Written by admin on . Posted in Essential Balance

As a soul temporarily residing in an earthly body, you are on a sacred journey of self-discovery. Developing self-knowledge requires shifting your focus from the world outside to your inner world—the invisible subjective realm of thought, feeling, emotion, energy, subtle perception, intuition, direct knowing and Oneness. Turning your attention inward, allows you to learn about your self and the sacred Source with which we are One.

“. . .[S]elf observation . . . means to watch everything in and around you
as far as possible and watch it as if it were happening to someone else.
What does that last sentence mean? It means that you do not personalize
what is happening to you. It means that you look at things
as if you have no connection with them whatsoever.” (Anthony DeMello)

Trust the Journey

Written by admin on . Posted in Essential Balance

From the moment we emerge into the world, we are travelers embarking on an unknown journey. Where will the road of life take us? We don’t know. While we can steer towards a particular destination, there may be any number of obstacles or detours. It’s a humbling realization that much of what happens in life is beyond our control. We have to trust the journey. Choosing to trust accelerates our soul’s evolutionary path because it allows us to transcend internal blocks to moving forward, which in turn provides the strength to release whatever may bind us to the past.

The concept of a journey is a well-known metaphor for life. Of course, a journey implies movement.

Top 5 Reasons to Go on a Retreat

Have you ever returned from a trip and felt like you needed a vacation? A boozy-party vacation, reminiscent of college kids on spring break, can leave you feeling worse than if you never went. In the same way, an overscheduled theme-park or sightseeing extravaganza can drain you both mentally and physically. Plus, as often happens when traveling, overindulging in heavy restaurant meals, local snacks, or unhealthy fast foods can easily throw your digestion out of whack. After trips like these, you often return home in need of detox and some restorative, healthy sleep. Maybe it’s time to make your next getaway a vacation for the soul—where you nourish the body, relax the mind, and connect to the soul.

Come Home for Christmas

Though we may be long past the age of believing in Santa Claus, it seems evident, during the holiday season, that we’ve been hooked by other myths. For example, just look at the media’s glossy portrait of the perfect Christmas. This image most often includes being surrounded by adoring family and friends, drinking and eating, shopping, party-hopping, entertaining, more shopping, and giving and receiving presents. All the while meeting the everyday demands of parenting, work, school and other responsibilities, feeling absolutely festive, and looking supermodel gorgeous! Whew! It’s exhausting just to think about living up to that impossible image, isn’t it? Yet, if we believe this fantasy, or any part of it, is what we need to be happy, or that this is how the holiday “should be,” then our beliefs give rise to unrealistic expectations; expectations that set us up for disappointment, stress, sadness and depression.

7 Benefits of Mindfulness Meditation

Written by admin on . Posted in Essential Balance

There have been a lot of news articles recently reporting on the benefits of mindfulness meditation. I’ve also noticed a trend in brand marketing to associate products with a conscious lifestyle by using the word mindful. There are Mindful Mints (“meditation in a mint”), a Mindful Moon iPhone app (“positive reminders to live brighter”), and even “Mindful Meats” (a meat company that brings local, organic, non-GMO, pasture-raised meats to market). Since I recently gave a short talk on the benefits of mindfulness, introducing a group of about 25 men and women to mindfulness meditation (all, but 3 or 4, were new to the practice), and, because “Be Mindful” is an Essential Balance Principle, I want to share with you, dear reader, on this important topic, too.

Among its many benefits, studies have found that mindfulness meditation

Grounding helps you to:

  1. Be more fully present.
  2. Feel stable and centered.
  3. Release heavy energy. (Yes, the Earth can recycle jangly, nervous or heavy energy of negative emotions! But, don’t worry, the Earth is not harmed in the process.)
  4. Improve your vitality.
  5. Bring your imagination down to earth, give it form, and manifest your dreams!

We access Earth energy through chakras in the soles of the feet and the root chakra at the base of the spine. Here’s how you can ground your energy:
