Tips for Working with the Wood Element to Support Your Dreams

The spirit of the wood element grants us the ability to imagine, to envision and to dream. Here are a few tips to support your goals and dreams:

 

·      Use your imagination to envision new possibilities. Make the picture in your inner eye as detailed as you can. What do you see? Hear? Feel? Who is there with you? How are you different? How is your world different?

 

·      Take some action. It can be small or even symbolic. Big dreams are not achieved in a day. Small actions build momentum over time. For example, if your dream is improved health and wellbeing, you might examine your lifestyle habits and make one small change by eliminating something harmful or adding something supportive and stay with it.

 

·      Notice and resolve creative tension. We have the amazing capacity to see both the ideal (what is possible) and the real (what is). When we are overly focused on what is possible (the future) and not enjoying the process (the present or what is) of reaching a goal, this creates impatience, frustration, anger and aggression. Be aware of these emotions and learn to express them healthfully because emotions are powerful energies and affect the body. Releasing emotion will help to keep your energy flowing.

 

·      Be flexible. “A tree that is unbending is easily broken.” (Lao Tzu) Increase your flexibility in body and mind to dial down tension and resistance as you move toward realizing your goals, dreams and visions. Consciously choose to come from a growth mindset. Know that you are capable of growth and that trial and error is part of the path. See obstacles as opportunities to think differently, consider alternatives and come up with creative solutions. Practice gentle movement, such as qi gong, yoga, or tai qi to keep tension from settling into the body, too.
