The Seasonal Rhythm of Late Summer

Updated: Aug 13

Late Summer—around mid-August until the Autumn Equinox—is marked by subtle shifts as the days become shorter and the sun’s fierce heat is more muted. It is a liminal time. Summer is waning, but Autumn has not yet arrived. One season is gradually dissolving, giving way to the next—a natural transition—as the expansive (yang) energy of summer slowly returns to center before moving inward (yin) in the fall and winter

Late Summer is associated with the Earth element because of the season’s abundant crops that provide nourishment and the Earth’s digestive abilities. The stomach and spleen, organs that are responsible of digestion, are related to the Earth element. The emotion corresponding to the stomach is empathy or caring when in balance. Self-absorption, overthinking and neediness are pronounced when emotion is out of balance.

To support the stomach and be in harmony with the seasonal vibration, eat warm naturally sweet foods such as corn, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, yellow squash and whole grains such as millet, quinoa and rice. Begin to transition from eating cold, raw foods to some more cooked foods. Very cold food such as icy drinks and ice cream can put out your digestive fire. Stomach likes warmth.

The seasonal archetype is the “Earth Mother” who is generous, grounded, sensual, caring, nurturing and empathetic. She prepares you a delicious nourishing meal and will lend you an ear, listening deeply. She offers food for the body and for the soul with her attention and emotional support. This is someone you feel at home with; safe in being yourself.

Can you be there in this generous caring way for yourself? for a friend or family member?

How do you nurture yourself and restore your energy?

Enjoy the season! Remember to connect with the Earth for support and to ground your energy.
