Don’t Feed the Fears: Keep Calm and Dream Strong

Written by admin on . Posted in Essential Balance

Concern about the presidential election is running very high. With serious issues —such as climate change, terrorism, poverty, unemployment, war, racism, and violence against women—having been brought to light during the campaign season, it’s hard not to be moved by them. The New York Times reports widespread “election anxiety.” According to a Harris Poll, “Facing one of the most adversarial contests in recent history and daily coverage of the presidential election that dominates every form of mass media, 52 percent of American adults report that the 2016 election is a very or somewhat significant source of stress.”

Don’t allow your self to become distracted by the media circus or your own fearful projections of a negative future. Remember, the only power that such fearful thoughts have is the power that you give them. Don’t feed the fears. Ground and center yourself in the heart whenever you feel off balance.

Expand Your World With Travel

You can enlarge your world on many levels through travel. More than just an outer world excursion, going some place that you’ve never been before can expand your inner world. When you explore new territory, including different geography, people, cultures and experiences, you may also discover something new about your deepest self.

For example, on a recent vacation, I tried something that I had never done before: a zip line canopy tour. Several friends told me that they had zip lined and enjoyed the experience. I wanted to try it, too. So, when I was making vacation travel arrangements for myself and for my boyfriend (who had never zip lined before either), I booked a cloud forest adventure tour.

Cloud forests generally occur in tropical, or sub-tropical, mountainous climates characterized by clouds that hover at the canopy level of the trees. The tour included riding an open-air gondola from the ground to the treetops where you are dropped off at an observation deck with fantastic views of the land below. From the observation deck, you return to the ground by riding down on a circuit of zip lines—8 of them altogether—stretching across canyons and between treetops.

Beyond Fear

Beyond Fear

Spring is a time of new growth and of new beginnings. It’s also typically viewed as a time of renewed hope. After surviving the harsh, cold of winter, the arrival of spring, with its gentler climate, pale green buds and tender blossoms, is thought to be a herald of better times to come. This year it seems, however, that some people can’t shake the winter chill.

In my healing practice, I see people who deeply desire change and wish to participate in the renewal of spring. They want to take a step forward in their lives, to stretch beyond their comfort zones, to heal and to grow. Yet paradoxically, they also fear change. I think this can be true for all of us, at one time, or another. Each of us has experienced fear. Our fears can stem from past trauma, relate to the unknown of the future, or be a combination of both. When innate desire to evolve and fear of change push and pull us in opposite directions, we get stuck.
